OXNARD, CA (PRWEB) August 14, 2014
Most people know that stress is bad for their teeth, but the two prosthodontists at the Anacapa Dental Art Institute want the public to know it also may be bad for their teeth.
Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is a habit that studies show tends to be related to stress.
“Bruxism is very destructive in many ways,” said Dr. Saj Jivraj, Oxnard dentist and founder of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute. “It can wear away your teeth, fatigue your jaw muscles and cause you to have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems.”
Teeth grinding is an insipid problem as most people don’t know they have it because it occurs when they sleep. Unless a bed partner hears them grinding their teeth or they recognize the symptoms, many people with bruxism suffer the consequences without knowing the cause.
“Patients with bruxism use their jaws much more forcefully when they are grinding their teeth than during the day,” Dr. Reshad said. “Besides wearing down your teeth, you can loosen or break them as well.”
Though there is no cure for bruxism, Dr. Reshad and Dr. Jivraj offer these six tips to fight bruxism:
1. Reduce your stress. This may be lifestyle changes, psychological help, meditation or medication.
2. Get a mouth guard from your dentist. This device, often called a splint, does not stop you from grinding your teeth but keeps your teeth from grinding against each other.
3. Reduce your caffeine intake.
4. Train yourself not to grind your teeth. Stop chewing on pencils and anything that isn’t food, including gum.
5. Relax your jaw muscles at night. Medication may help, but so can a warm washcloth or heating pad on your cheek.
6. Reduce your alcohol consumption. Alcohol has been linked with teeth grinding.
