Columbus, OH (PRWEB) May 04, 2013
The lawyers at Wright & Schulte have filed three bladder mesh lawsuits against the Boston Scientific Corporation on behalf of women from Georgia, Nebraska and New York. These vaginal mesh lawsuits, which are part of MDL 2326, were all filed on March 4, 2013 and allege that the plaintiffs have all suffered from serious injuries and an impaired quality of life due to the defective design of Boston Scientific’s transvaginal mesh implants. As with previous transvagainal mesh lawsuits filed by Wright & Schulte, these vaginal lawsuits will all be litigated in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of West Virginia, Charleston Division.

Allegations of Bladder Mesh Sling Injuries
In order to treat their pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and/or their stress urinary incontinence (SUI), the plaintiffs in these vaginal mesh lawsuits had surgery to have Boston Scientific’s Obtryx Transobturaator Mid-Urethral Sling System implanted in their lower abdomen. After implantation surgery, however, painful mesh sling complications allegedly developed in all three plaintiffs and resulted in them developing irreversible injuries that greatly impaired their quality of life. Pelvic and urinary pain, pain during sexual intercourse, vaginal scaring, mesh erosion through the vaginal lining, an increased risk of infection, puncturing of the blood vessels/bowels/bladder and recurrence of SUI are among some of the vaginal mesh injuries reportedly caused by Boston Scientific’s transvaginal mesh slings. The plaintiffs in these recently filed mesh lawsuits include a Georgia woman who had the Obtryx Sling System implanted in 2005 (case no. 2:13-cv-04152); a Nebraska woman who had the Obtryx Sling System implanted in 2009 (case no. 2:13-cv-04153); and a New York woman who had the Obtryx Sling System implanted in 2005 (case no. 2:23-cv-04154).
FDA Warnings about Serious Vaginal Mesh Complications
The FDA issued a vaginal mesh injuries warning in 2011, alerting the public that transvaginal mesh complications are not rare and that, for some women, implantation of vaginal mesh devices was no more effective than traditional surgeries. Specifically, after reviewing more than 100 bladder mesh sling studies, the FDA found that about 10 percent women with these devices have developed or would develop serious injuries that require revision surgery and possibly vaginal mesh removal within one year of implantation. In some of the worst cases, women reportedly needed multiple revision surgeries to repair the damage caused by bladder mesh slings.
Other important highlights of the 2011 FDA public warning were that vaginal mesh devices had greater risks of complications than traditional surgery for treating POP and SUI and that vaginal mesh may not even be sufficient at alleviating the symptoms of prolapse.
