Updox Introduces Resources to Help Hospitals Choose the Right HISP for Direct Messaging

Dublin, Ohio (PRWEB) July 31, 2014

Updox, the industry leader for physician connectivity and CRM solutions for health care, announces the release of a “Twelve Questions to Ask When Selecting a HISP” guide and a web seminar for hospitals that are evaluating Health Information Service Providers (HISPs) for Direct Messaging to meet Meaningful Use Stage 2. Hospitals that utilize MEDITECH and Epic electronic health records (EHRs) need to separately contract with a HISP in order to exchange transitions of care using the Direct protocol.

“Selecting a HISP can be confusing. There are many vendors from which to select and a great deal of criteria to consider,” said Michael Morgan, chief executive officer, Updox. “Hospitals must be careful to partner with a HISP that has complete accreditation to avoid working with separate vendors to manage certificates. This provides a more efficient, complete information exchange and maximum reach. Hospitals should also consider HISPs that have significant experience in EHR integration to ensure a smooth implementation and ongoing integration.”

Updox is a HISP that operates the Updox Direct Network (UDN), the largest in the nation built on Direct, with more than 45 EHR vendors, representing 140,000 physicians. Updox is one of just 12 organizations that have earned complete HISP, RA and CA accreditations. Updox is also a founding member of Carequality, partnering with 33 national organizations to develop and maintain a standards-based interoperability framework to enable information exchange between and among networks with the goal of improved outcomes, increased efficiency and reduced health care costs.

Updox introduced a “Twelve Questions to Ask When Selecting a HISP” guide that can be downloaded at The guide provides questions that hospitals should ask when evaluating HISPs. In addition, a web seminar “Selecting a Direct eMail HISP for Your Hospital” will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. ET. The web seminar will include key HISP selection criteria, HISP accreditations and what they mean to your hospital, best practices for using Direct messaging, as well as suggestions for other ways to use Direct messaging beyond Meaningful Use. Beyond meeting Stage 2 Meaningful Use criteria, Updox offers a full communications platform that extends the use of Direct messaging past Meaningful use. Direct can be used as complete messaging service where information can be shared with any other care provider approved to have a Direct email address. This can include C-CDAs, progress notes, lab results, X-rays, MRI Images, and any other documents or messages. Updox continues to develop new ways of using Direct Messaging to support interoperability and extend the value of the technology.

“In addition to just picking a HISP, there are key decisions hospitals must make when implementing Direct,” continued Morgan. “While some hospitals look at Direct Messaging as merely a check box for Meaningful Use and are only planning on one Direct email for the entire hospital, more forward thinking hospitals are giving each of their physicians their own email address to take full advantage of this new communications tool. Any hospital planning to use just one Direct email should really rethink their strategy."

The size and scope of the UDN, Updox’s experience with serving a wide scope of health care entities and the organization’s partnerships with more than 45 EHR vendors allows them to offer a service that is easily and quickly implemented and complemented by full-scale training and support staff. Updox is also able to provide a hospital’s health partners with Direct messaging addresses and support to help the hospital meet Meaningful Use requirements.
