Stryker announced a global recall of its Rejuvenate and ABG II hip stems and stopped worldwide sales of the products in July 2012, after data indicated the metal hip stems were fretting and corroding at an unacceptably high rate. According to the company, some 20,000 hip stems involved in the Stryker hip implant recall were sold between their launch in 2009 and the recall announcement. Patients fitted with one of these recalled devices may experience pain, swelling or adverse local tissue reactions if their device is subject to fretting and/or corrosion.
