The Oregon Convention Center served as the venue for the University of Western States (UWS) 199th commencement honoring students receiving doctor of chiropractic (DC) and Bachelor of Science in human biology degrees. Several DC graduates will also complete the Master of Science degree program in exercise and sports science in December and were recognized at today’s ceremony.

The commencement address was given by Keith Overland, DC, president of the American Chiropractic Association and a chiropractic physician at Norwalk Chiropractic in Norwalk, Conn. Dr. Overland specializes as a certified chiropractic sports physician and sports medicine trainer. He is also an instructor at the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic.

Leo Romero, DC, a UWS trustee and chairman of the board, presented the trustee emeritus award to Nancy McCown, DC, for her many years of dedicated service to UWS. A 1977 UWS graduate, Dr. McCown served as a trustee from 2003 to 2012, and was chairman of the board from 2006 to 2009. Dr. McCown is a chiropractic physician at McCown Chiropractic in Longview, Wash.

Corey O’Neill, who graduated summa cum laude in the DC program and will complete an MS degree program in exercise and sports science at the end of this year, was selected to give the student address.

Degrees were conferred by Joseph Brimhall, DC, president of UWS, to graduates presented by William Borman, PhD, dean of the College of Chiropractic.

Dr. Brimhall was joined by hundreds of family members, friends, alumni, students, faculty and staff who attended the ceremony to congratulate graduates on their accomplishment, and wish them success in their health care careers.
