University of Cincinnati Campus Recognized Among the Greenest in America
Date:5/3/2013

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) May 03, 2013

For the fourth consecutive year, the Princeton Review has recognized the University of Cincinnati as one of the greenest in America. The 2013 edition of “Guide to 322 Green Colleges” lauded UC’s commitment to sustainability and the campus environment. According to the Guide, “the University of Cincinnati takes its role as an environmental steward seriously, incorporating the idea of sustainability throughout university operations and classrooms.”

On a ranking scale of between 60 and 99, UC earned a 95, securing a top place among American universities. Several initiatives contributed to UC’s high marks, including:

  • The UC campus has one gold-certified LEED building, one silver LEED building, and four bronze LEED buildings (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, by the U.S. Green Building Council).
  • An urban agricultural garden allows students to gain hands-on experience in sustainable living.
  • Sustainability lectures, workshops, and events are offered to all students.
  • Recycling is well underway on campus, with UC having recycled 10.3 tons of material in the last year.

To potential students, this matters. When students look for a university to study at, commitment to the environment factors high in their decisions. The Princeton Review, in its 2013 “College Hopes and Worries Survey,” also noted that out of 9,955 university applicants, sixty two percent claimed a university’s commitment to the environment was influential in their choice of university.

This is especially the case for international students in America, who want a university relevant to the real challenges facing the global world today. When choosing a US university for international students, applicants look for the whole package. Decision making criteria include not only the quality of the education, but the diversity of the campus lifestyle, the campus environment, and the university’s place in the broader world.

UC aims to be carbon neutral by the year 2050—all waste will be offset by positive contributions to the environment. By constantly improving the environmental sustainability of its campus, UC is aiming to take a prime place in the world’s developing green economy. To this end, upcoming improvements include:

  •     All new buildings will have LEED certification, to ensure energy efficiency
  •     Compositing programs from dining halls, to reduce food waste around campus
  •     Environmental literacy training for housekeeping staff

Achieving this goal will put UC firmly at the forefront of green universities. When both American— and international students in America—come time to choose a US university, UC will be there for those wanting to take their place in a sustainable future.
