United Theological Seminary Receives Grant From Lilly Endowment
Date:12/6/2013

Dayton, Ohio (PRWEB) December 06, 2013

United Theological Seminary (United) has been awarded a $250,000 grant by Lilly Endowment Inc. as part of the Endowment’s Theological School initiative to Address Economic Challenges Facing Future Ministers. The purpose of this initiative is to enable theological schools to examine and strengthen their financial and educational strategies and practices in order to improve the economic well-being of future pastoral leaders.

The funding will help United improve the economic well-being of future ministers with research to help determine the challenges they face; help potential students understand the importance of financing options, career opportunities and budget planning; and improve financial literacy for personal and congregational health.

"This grant will help United take a giant step forward toward the widely-shared goal of decreasing substantially the indebtedness of those called to professional ministry," said Dr. Wendy Deichmann, President of United Theological Seminary. "We hope to enhance the well-being of students and graduates and impact congregations and communities where our graduates serve. We are grateful to Lilly Endowment for this opportunity."

Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by three members of the Lilly family -- J.K. Lilly Sr. and sons JK, Jr. and Eli -- through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly & Company. The Endowment exists to support the causes of religion, education and community development. Lilly Endowment’s religion grantmaking is designed to deepen and enrich the religious lives of American Christians. It does this largely through initiatives to enhance and sustain the quality of ministry in American congregations and parishes.

United Theological Seminary, now in its 143rd year, is one of the fastest growing theological schools in the United States. It was founded in 1871 by Milton Wright, a Bishop in The United Brethren Church and father of Wilbur, Orville and Katherine Wright. United offers accredited, innovative graduate and non-degree education programs for both clergy and laity. Click here for more information about United Theological Seminary.
