Washington, DC (Vocus) June 25, 2010 -- As world leaders come together today in Canada for the G8 and G20 meetings, they will prioritize the health of the world’s women and children. UN Foundation CEO Kathy Calvin offered the following statement in support of the G8 Muskoka Flagship Initiative on maternal, newborn, and child health.
“The UN Foundation is pleased to join in support for the G8 Muskoka Initiative. It will be an important catalyst for the United Nations Joint Action Plan for Women’s and Children’s Health. Prime Minister Harper and the leaders of the G8 have provided important momentum to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s call for quick action to prevent millions of needless deaths and improve the well-being of mothers and children everywhere.
“Each year, hundreds of thousands of women lose their lives during pregnancy or childbirth, and close to 8 million children die before their fifth birthday. The Secretary-General’s Joint Action Plan brings together the key players -- the UN, governments, the private sector, and civil society -- to accelerate partnerships, innovation, and new financial resources to advance the Millennium Development Goals.”
