Union Hospital, Hong Kong, Selects First DataBank's Electronic Drug Information in Medication Safety Initiative
Date:12/8/2009

Thanks to a new medication safety initiative, clinicians at Union Hospital Hong Kong will have access to electronic drug information to assist them during prescribing and dispensing. Inconsistent drug terminology and a lack of drug information during prescribing are major contributing factors to medication errors.

(PRWEB) December 8, 2009 -- Union Hospital, a leading private hospital in Hong Kong, has selected First DataBank (FDB) to provide its electronic drug database and clinical decision support in a move to enhance medication safety. For the first time, clinicians at the 300-bed hospital will have access to patient-specific drug information whilst prescribing and dispensing.

Medication errors occur at an alarming rate in hospitals worldwide. Major contributing factors include confusion arising from inconsistent drug terminology and a lack of relevant drug information during prescribing.

Within Union Hospital's Information System, FDB's clinical decision support will enable clinicians to check the medication about to be prescribed or dispensed against information held in a patient's electronic health record. On-screen alerts are generated if there are potential drug-drug interactions, sensitivities or drug-disease indications.

FDB's drug database will provide users with comprehensive information on thousands of prescription drugs which is concise, relevant and displayed in a consistent format.

FDB's drug information is already in use by the public healthcare provider, the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong, across the majority of its hospitals. The use of the same drug database and clinical decision support within the private hospital sector in Hong Kong, further reduces the risk of medication errors by providing consistency in drug terminology across the region's healthcare settings.

"The implementation of clinical decision support is an important part of our medication safety strategy" says Dr. Anthony Lee, Chief Hospital Manager & Medical Director, Union Hospital. "We selected First DataBank for its regional expertise, service, comprehensive drug information and patient safety focus. An added benefit of this initiative is that we will be using the same drug information as the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong, helping us to provide better care for patients transitioning between services."

Chung Liauw, Managing Director, First DataBank, Australia, comments: "Working with Union Hospital we can help to improve patient safety by providing clinicians with the comprehensive and specific information they need. Union Hospital's adoption of electronic clinical decision support is an acknowledgement of the importance that it can play in helping to reduce medication errors."
