UTHealth's Sibai receives national recognition award
Date:4/8/2014

HOUSTON (April 8, 2014) Baha M. Sibai, M.D., professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

"Dr. Sibai has dedicated his medical career to improving the health of pregnant women. He has trained a generation of obstetricians and maternal-fetal medicine subspecialists and has personally performed much of the research that has informed current clinical practice regarding hypertensive disease in pregnancy," said Brian Mercer, M.D., immediate past president of the Society and professor and chair of reproductive biology at Case Western Reserve University. "He has improved the health of thousands of women he has cared for directly. Through those he has taught, and through his research, Dr. Sibai has impacted the lives of literally millions of women nationally and internationally."

Sibai directs UTHealth's maternal-fetal medicine fellowship program and has active clinical practices at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, part of Harris Health System.

Sibai is a founding member and past president of the North American Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy and past president of the International Society for the Study of Hypertension and Pregnancy. He has an extensive history of grant funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control. He has published more than 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 226 of which are directly related to chronic hypertension, preeclampsia and eclampsia.
