Special events for junior and senior tennis players plus wheelchair events have also been added to the tournament. Since 1978, it has been held at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. In the early years, only men's competitions were held in US National tennis tournaments. The challenge system was inducted into the tournament in 1884.
