breast reconstruction. During a mastectomy, skin and tissue removed during the surgery is replaced with skin and soft tissue borrowed from the abdomen. Unlike the TRAM flap procedure, the DIEP flap takes tissue from the abdominal area, but leaves the muscle intact. Giving women the same, natural look and feel without the complications arising from removing the muscle in the abdominal area.

DIEP flap is a delicate procedure, and requires more time and skill on behalf of the surgeon as it requires microsurgery to reconnect the tiny blood vessels. Because the DIEP flap's complexity, the TRAM flap procedure has been more widely used by surgeons. This will be the first time DIEP flap breast reconstruction is offered as a choice to women in Colorado and the surrounding areas.
