Trust for America's Health Statement on Senate Plan to Cut Public Health Funds from Stimulus

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Trust for America's Health released the following statement after the US Senate announced their plan last night to cut more than $100 billion from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

"We are profoundly disappointed that the Senate struck a final bargain to strip all funds for prevention and wellness from its stimulus plan, failing to recognize that this funding would have created or saved over 40,000 jobs while keeping Americans healthy during a time when many are losing access to health care," said Jeffrey Levi, Executive Director of TFAH. "We hope President Obama will continue to stand up for the principles he supported throughout this process and that the House negotiators will insist that the funding they secured for Americans' jobs and health be restored."

The Senate bill strips $5.8 billion, the total amount allocated for prevention and wellness, from the bill recommended by the Senate Appropriations Committee. The House-passed bill had $3 billion in a comparable fund.
