Trust for America's Health Joins GAO in Calling for Next Administration to Focus on Urgent Public Health Issues as Top Priorities
Date:11/6/2008

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Trust for America's Health (TFAH) supports the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in calling on the President-Elect and 111th Congress to focus on food safety and preparing for large-scale health disasters as two of the top 13 priority issues facing the country. The GAO released a list of top "urgent issues" for the next President and Congress today.

"The GAO recognized that the public health concerns of keeping Americans safe and healthy require the immediate attention of the next President and Congress," said Jeffrey Levi, PhD, Executive Director of TFAH. "Recent natural disasters, like Hurricanes Katrina and Ike, and the widespread salmonella outbreak are strong reminders of why these issues are so urgent."

Trust for America's Health recently released a Blueprint for a Healthier America: Modernizing the Federal Public Health System to Focus on Prevention and Preparedness, which includes specific recommendations for improving health emergency preparedness and food safety in the U.S., and is available on TFAH's Web site at http://www.healthyamericans.org.

Trust for America's Health is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to saving lives by protecting the health of every community and working to make disease prevention a national priority. http://www.healthyamericans.org
