Columbus, OH (PRWEB) June 25, 2013
The Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit lawyers at Wright & Schulte have filed a vaginal mesh lawsuit against Ethicon, Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson. This vaginal mesh lawsuit (case no. 2:13-cv-04803) is part of MDL 2327 and was filed on March 10, 2013 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia, Charleston Division. Court documents associated with this transvaginal mesh lawsuit or bladder mesh lawsuit allege that the defective design of Ethicon’s transvaginal tape implant resulted in the plaintiff, a Michigan woman, developing painful, permanent injuries. This case also contends that Ethicon, Inc. failed to adequately warn the public about the risks of serious injuries associated with its bladder mesh slings.

Alleged Transvaginal Mesh Sling Injuries
According to the complaint (case no. 2:13-cv-04803), in June 2007, the plaintiff had surgery to have Ethicon’s transvaginal tape-SECUR (TVT-S) implanted as part of the treatment for her pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and her stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Soon after the TVT-S implantation, however, the plaintiff began suffering from debilitating complications that were allegedly so painful that they negatively impacted her quality of life and, ultimately, had a detrimental impact on her marital relationship. Court documents for this case also explain that the Ethicon knew or should have known about the risk of severe injuries and complications associated with its TVT and mesh devices and yet it failed to properly alert the public about these potential dangers.
Risks of Vaginal Mesh Injuries Highlighted by FDA Warning
In July 2011, the FDA issued a safety warning regarding the risks of severe transvaginal mesh complications. Specifically, the FDA’s 2011 bladder mesh warning stated that, after reviewing more than 100 studies on mesh slings, the FDA had found that approximately 1 in every 10 women with a bladder mesh sling has developed or would develop serious complications. The FDA also warned that many of these mesh complications required invasive revision surgery and possibly the removal of the mesh sling within 12 months of implantation. In some of the most serious cases the FDA reviewed, a number of corrective surgeries had to be performed in order to treat the severe injuries caused by the allegedly defective vaginal mesh devices.

Some of the serious problems associated with Ethicon’s TVT and other transvaginal mesh implants have reportedly included urinary pain, pain during intercourse, vaginal scaring, mesh erosion through the vaginal lining, an increased risk of infection, puncturing of the blood vessels/bowels/bladder and recurrence of SUI.
As part of its 2011 public warning, the FDA also highlighted the fact that vaginal mesh slings were more prone to complications than traditional surgery for POP and SUI and that vaginal mesh may not be effective at relieving the symptoms of prolapse.
