Two Los Angeles Universities, VSP(R) Vision Care and Transitions Optical
Join Together to Help Hispanic Families Improve Their Eye Health
PINELLAS PARK, Fla., Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Transitions Optical, Inc. announced its partnership with the American Career College, Hacienda La Puente Adult Education and VSP(R) Vision Care to promote healthy sight habits among the Los Angeles Hispanic community at the American Diabetes Association's Feria de Salud por tu Familia(TM). The family health fair will be held on Sunday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Placita Olvera at 125 Paseo La Plaza Street in Los Angeles.
"It is imperative to consider healthy sight as part of overall health and wellness. Therefore, we would like to invite Hispanic consumers to visit the Transitions area at the family health fair and have the opportunity to meet eyecare professionals and learn about ways to improve their eye health," said Pete Sandoval, Program Director of Hacienda La Puente Adult Education.
One of the most important health concerns for Hispanics is the prevalence of diabetes and its effects on the eyes. According to a recent clinical report released by the Transitions Partners in Education(TM) program, 50 percent of surveyed diabetic patients were not aware of vision problems as a side effect of diabetes, while only 38 percent of those surveyed who do not have diabetes knew that the disease could pose side effects in their vision.(1) Diabetes can affect the eyes in many ways. During the early stage of the disease, patients often experience blurred vision. Therefore, in many cases, a patient's eyecare professional may be the first to detect the disease, based on changes seen in the eye through a comprehensive eye exam.(2) In the Los Angeles area there are over 600,000 people diagnosed with diabetes.(3)
Diabetes and the medications that many patients must take to control the disease can directly affect quality of vision by reducing contrast sensitivity and increasing sensitivity to glare, essentially impacting long-term visual health. Additionally, continuous exposure to harmful UV rays can increase the vulnerability of certain eye cells associated with diabetic retinopathy.(4)
"We want to offer the Los Angeles Hispanic community the opportunity to receive free vision screenings so eye conditions can be detected at an early stage. Those who are at risk of developing an eye condition need to visit their eyecare professional for a comprehensive eye exam," said Martha Rivera, Transitions Optical multicultural marketing manager. "Our partnership with prestigious organizations such as the American Career College, Hacienda La Puente Adult Education and VSP(R) Vision Care further demonstrates Transitions' commitment to educating consumers about the importance of healthy sight and wellness."
Some fair participants could be eligible to receive a gift certificate for a free comprehensive eye exam and a free pair of eyeglasses from VSP when visiting the Transitions booth.
"Participating in the health fair and receiving a vision screening is the first step consumers should take to achieve optimal eye health," said Emelia Essilfie, Program Director of the American Career College. "If you plan on visiting the Transitions booth to receive a free eye screening, please bring at least one member of your family who can also benefit from the opportunity and promote healthy sight among your loved ones."
Along with preventative eyecare, it's important to choose appropriate eyewear that will protect the eyes from the dangers of the sun. Photochromic lenses, like Transitions(R) lenses, block 100% of harmful UV rays, reduce discomforting glare and improve contrast in all light conditions, helping to preserve long-term eye health.

About Transitions Optical, Inc.
Transitions Optical is a joint venture of PPG Industries, Inc. and Essilor International. Transitions Optical offers the most advanced photochromic technology and the widest selection of lens designs, materials and brand names.
Transitions(R) lenses are as clear as regular eyeglass lenses until dangerous UV rays are present. Then, the brighter the sun, the darker they get -- getting as dark as sunglasses, providing protection in bright, glaring light. Since Transitions lenses darken only as much as needed, they can be worn comfortably year-round to provide convenience and 100 percent automatic UVA/UVB and glare protection every day -- sunny, cloudy or in between.
