Total Knee Replacement Surgeons at Bethesda Health Offer New Technology that Harnesses Intelligent Orthopaedic Surgery Using The VERASENSE Knee System
Date:8/2/2013

Boynton Beach, Florida (PRWEB) August 02, 2013

Surgeons at Bethesda Orthopaedics, a part of Bethesda Health, Inc. are performing intelligent Orthopaedic knee replacement surgery with the VERASENSE Knee System, a new technology that harnesses the latest innovations in sensors, accelerometers, microelectronics and wireless communications to improve healthcare outcomes and reduce the cost of treating musculoskeletal disease.
Benefits of the VERASENSE Knee System:

  •     Due to the real-time data, surgeons are able to make adjustments to soft tissue around the knee and optimize implant placement
  •     Helps to improve outcomes
  •     Reduces failure rates in knee replacement surgery
  •     Improves function of the new knee
  •     Reduces the need for costly revision surgery

Surgeons utilize the VERASENSE Knee Application and VERASENSE Sensors to quantify and verify the proper rotation, alignment and load of the knee implant during total knee replacement surgery. Proper balance of the soft tissues, such as ligaments, tendons and muscles, are critical for a knee implant to function correctly. Improper soft tissue balance and alignment has been demonstrated to cause up to 36% of early implant revision surgeries. Knee replacements performed with this new intelligent Orthopaedic system may reduce patients’ risk of premature implant failure.

“If soft tissues are too tight, the knee cannot regain its full range of motion; if too loose, the joint may become unstable; if loaded excessively on one area, an implant will fail prematurely,” said Elvis Grandic, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon at Bethesda Health, Inc. “By using Intelligent Orthopaedics to optimize the placement of knee implants, we are providing our patients the best chance for successful long-term clinical outcomes.”

The VERASENSE Sensor replaces the standard tibial trial spacer currently used during knee replacement surgery. The surgeon inserts the VERASENSE Sensor between the femoral and tibial components of the knee implant and utilizes feedback provided by the sensor to customize implant positioning and balance the soft tissues. VERASENSE is embedded with advanced sensors, accelerometers and microelectronics that quantify joint balance, load and alignment intra-operatively. Once the implant position is finalized, the intelligent instrument is removed and replaced with a permanent implant component.

Until now, surgeons’ decisions about these soft tissue functions have varied based on individual judgment, experience and skill set, due to the lack of quantifiable data. By contrast, the VERASENSE Knee System measures and wirelessly transmits key data to a dynamic graphic display, enabling the surgeons to visualize and quantify joint balance, alignment and load during knee replacement procedures. With this evidence, surgeons can make informed adjustments to the soft tissues to optimize implant placement.

“VERASENSE advances our decision-making about crucial soft tissue adjustments from a feel-based art, to a quantifiable science,” said Dr. Grandic. “Bethesda Health’s orthopaedic surgeons now have a way to measure and verify intra-operatively that a knee implant is properly positioned.”
