The answer to the question of why people gain weight as they age has been discovered. The surprising reason is that with age, healthy brown fat becomes less efficient at burning unhealthy, harmful abdominal fat.

Two types of fat have been identified in the body, white fat and brown fat. White fat forms as a result of eating too much, is commonly found around the stomach, and is known as the dangerous, bad fat. The other type of fat is brown fat, this type of fat is considered “good” fat as it helps burn the bad fat in the body.

As people reach age 40 and beyond, the thermogenic effect of brown fat slows. This means that brown fat is less proficient in burning white fat. As a result, people need to participate in additional physical activity to achieve the same fat burning results.
