OAK BROOK, Ill., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- For the second year, the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) recognizes academic medical center (AMC) members for demonstrating excellence in supply chain management in the UHC Supply Chain Performance Excellence Collaborative. The Collaborative Advisory Team, composed of executives from AMC members and UHC, examined supply chain participants that provided data through UHC's Operational Data Base to measure cost savings and efficiency in supply, pharmacy, cardiology, and surgical services expense management and operating margin.

Awards will be presented to representatives of the 5 top-performing organizations today at the UHC 2009 Performance Excellence Forum in Orlando, Fla., by David Entwistle, chief executive officer, University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, and co-chairperson of the UHC Collaborative Advisory Team. This year's forum focuses on providing outstanding service in operational, clinical, financial, and supply chain areas, underscoring the meeting's theme, "Sustaining the Art and Science of Service."

This year, the collaborative identified 4 areas of practice in which the 5 top performers excel:

  • Physician advocacy
  • Cultural commitment to cost containment
  • Data-driven behavior
  • Creative strategic partnerships

"The UHC Supply Chain Performance Excellence Collaborative will continue to seek out and highlight UHC members who have successful and proven techniques for achieving supply chain optimization," said Entwistle. "Congratulations to these 5 organizations and to all of the UHC member organizations on their dedication to supply chain excellence."

"This study was established to provide members with insights, information, and proven techniques for lowering costs and improving supply chain efficiency," said Jake Groenewold, UHC vice president. "We will continue to share the lessons learned from the top performers and provide resources that will help all members develop and implement strategies to improve their overall organizational performance."

The UHC Supply Chain Performance Excellence Collaborative began in 2007 to help UHC supply chain participants better understand and define supply chain performance and to provide them with actionable information for making measurable, sustainable performance improvements.

The University HealthSystem Consortium, based in Oak Brook, Ill, is an alliance of 103 academic medical centers and 210 of their affiliated hospitals, representing more than 90% of the nation's nonprofit AMCs. UHC provides data products and services to members to enhance clinical, operational, financial, and supply chain performance. Visit the About UHC section of www.uhc.edu for more information.
