Too Much Sunlight Exposure Can Burn Your Eyes - The Pennsylvania Association for the Blind Offers Prevention Suggestions

Sunscreen? Check! Bug Spray? Check! Hat? Check! Ready for a fun-filled day outside in the sun? Almost! Don’t forget to wear your shades! The sun is out and the days are long and after this rainy spring everyone is anxious and excited to get outside and enjoy the weather. Remembering to lather on the sunscreen is great, but running around without sunglasses can lead to overexposure to UV Rays and can cause abnormal growths on the eye surface, and even sunburn of the eyes that may cause temporary vision loss, or even blindness.

Ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B, powerful, invisible rays are the most dangerous parts of sunlight. They can cause cataracts, eyelid cancers and other skin cancers and are believed to play a part in macular degeneration, a major cause of vision loss for people over age 60. The good news is that you can easily protect yourself! Stay safe in the sun by following some of these easy tips;

1. Wear protection eyewear any time the eyes are exposed to UV rays, even on cloudy days and during the winter.
2. Look for quality sunglasses or contact lenses that offer good protection. Sunglasses or protective contact lenses should block out 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B radiation and screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light.
3. Check to make sure sunglass lenses are perfectly matched in color and free of distortions or imperfections.
4. Purchase gray-colored lenses because they reduce light intensity without altering the color of objects to provide the most natural color vision.
5. Don’t forget protection for young children and teenagers, who typically spend more time in the sun than adults and thus are at greater risk of damage. Have children and teenagers wear sunglasses, or protective hats that shade the eyes from the sun.

So, how do you pick the right shades? Tastes and lifestyles are very different. Fortunately, it is possible to find sunglasses that meet your style needs and protect your eyes at the same time! Here are a few tips;

Pick the right shape. The shape of a face can influence how comfortable a pair of sunglasses will feel. Rectangular frames will help add length to a round face, and oval glasses will complement diamond or square faces. People with oblong faces, may want to consider a round or square frame that rests at the widest part of your face.

Find the right solution. Eyeglass wearers should use sunglasses too. Consider Solar Shield, who has developed attractive Fits Over sunglasses that slip on over prescription eyewear. You may also want to look into Transition Lenses that darken as you transition into the sun from indoors.

Spend the right amount. Many low-cost shades probably won’t provide adequate UV protection, but you still don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a good pair of sunglasses. Evaluate the quality and durability of every pair you buy.
