The Tennessee Car Accident Lawyers at Michael D. Ponce & Associates Alert Public of CDC Survey Revealing Majority of High School Seniors Admitting to Texting Behind Wheel

The Tennessee auto accident lawyers at Michael D. Ponce & Associates, a law firm that is dedicated to representing people who are injured in traffic crashes and other incidents brought about by negligence or recklessness, hereby alert the public of the results of a survey conducted by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the CDC. The survey revealed that more than 50 percent of high school seniors admitted to sending and/or receiving text messages or emails while behind the wheel of a vehicle within the previous year.

The CDC survey was conducted by asking a series of questions of more than 15,000 high school students around the country. The results showed that 58 percent of high school seniors admitted to partaking in this conduct within the previous year, while 43 percent of high school juniors also admitted to sending and/or receiving text messages or emails while behind the wheel of a vehicle.

"We need to teach kids, who are the most vulnerable drivers, that texting and driving don't mix," LaHood said at a Washington news conference after the results of the survey were released. To date, a total of 39 states ban texting while driving for people of all ages, and another five states ban the practice for new or novice drivers. Tennessee is one of the states that has outlawed texting for every motorist.

According to the statistics kept by the Tennessee Department of Safety, teen drivers are involved in nearly 40,000 Tennessee car accidents every year, and approximately 150 of these crashes lead to at least one fatality.
