The Stars Align to Raise National Awareness of Mental Health and Substance Use at 18th Annual PRISM Awards
Date:9/5/2014

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 05, 2014

Entertainment Industries Council, Inc. (EIC) has announced the premiere airing of the 18th Annual PRISM Showcase with host Dr. Drew Pinsky (Dr. Drew On Call) and guest co-hosts Candace Cameron Bure (Full House), and Tim Kang (The Mentalist). Tune in September 6, 2014 on flagship airing partner FX to see this year’s honorees in television shows and movies that accurately depict mental health and substance use prevention, treatment and recovery. Additional airings will include those on PIVOT and RLTV.

“Powerful stories about mental health not only raise public awareness, but may also encourage people to recognize and address these issues in their personal lives. The PRISM Awards aggregate these topics from media and spotlight the impact our industry has to create positive change in people’s lives,” said PRISM Showcase host, Dr. Drew Pinsky.

“This year, the heightened national and relevant conversation surrounding mental health is unprecedented. The 400 plus submissions reviewed and nominees scored by the PRISM Nomination Review Committee represent the foundation of this movement’s commitment to authenticity in entertainment media and journalism. These productions and our airing partners shine a spotlight on life saving issues and better enable family and community conversation about mental health, substance use, and hopefully encourage individuals to seek the help they need,” said Brian Dyak, President and CEO of EIC.

September marks the start of National Recovery Month, a month dedicated to supporting prevention, treatment, and recovery from substance use and co-occurring disorders. In alignment with this meaningful month, the PRISM Showcase will premiere on FX at 12 p.m. ET / PT, with an encore airing at 2 a.m. ET / PT. Additional airings can be seen on PIVOT on September 7th at 2 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. PT and on RLTV on September 11th at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT, before the show enters an extended availability on additional cable networks, online, digital platforms, video-on-demand, and local broadcasts through the end of March. For complete airing schedules, please check your local listings or PRISMawards.com.

“It is a true privilege to serve as Chairman of the PRISM Awards Honorary Committee and to continue to join forces with the Entertainment Industries Council. Entertainment programming has the ability to cross both cultural and social boundaries, not only to entertain, but also to reduce stigma and discrimination on important issues through relatable characters and powerful storylines. We are proud to showcase the positive power of entertainment once again this year,” said John Landgraf, CEO, FX Networks and FX Productions.

Dr. Drew, along with co-hosts Candace Cameron Bure and Tim Kang, will be joined on the show by Allison Janney (Mom), Chandra Wilson (Grey’s Anatomy), Octavia Spencer (Red Band Society), Alison Haislip (The Morning After), Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Justin Chambers (Grey’s Anatomy), Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, Will Estes (Blue Bloods), Max Burkholder (Parenthood), Troian Bellisario (Pretty Little Liars), Tim Matheson (Hart of Dixie), Sharon Lawrence (The After), Lea Thompson (Call Me Crazy), Ernie Hudson (Call Me Crazy), Jason Ritter (Parenthood), Benjamin Stockham (About a Boy), Greer Grammer (Awkward), Laura Bell Bundy (Anger Management), Dee Wallace (Grimm), Grant Bowler (Defiance), Nikki DeLoach (Awkward), Windell Middlebrooks (Body of Proof), Michael Lomenda (Jersey Boys), Phillip P.
