Gift of Mobility Lets Korean War Veteran and Gardening Enthusiast Regain Mobility

BONNE TERRE, Mo., June 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On the inside looking out is not where Sherman Pyatt, age 76, wants to be. With limited mobility due to a terminal lung illness, Mr. Pyatt is housebound and can only look through the windows at his yard. Thanks to a donated power wheelchair from The SCOOTER Store, Mr. Pyatt has regained his mobility and independence so he can get back outside and enjoy firsthand his beloved fruit trees, flowers and chickens.

Today, just two weeks after his daughter wrote to The SCOOTER Store seeking a power wheelchair, Mobility Manager Troy Harris from The SCOOTER Store presented a power wheelchair to Mr. Pyatt as part of the "Gift of Mobility" program. The program provides mobility equipment and assistance to those who do not have the resources to purchase power wheelchairs and scooters.

After Mr. Pyatt bravely served this country in the Korean War, he worked as a crane operator in different steel factories while his wife, Shirley, raised their eight children. Their family has grown to include 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. The close-knit family lives within Missouri and they spend as much time together as possible. The family loves to spend a Sunday in Mr. Pyatt's yard having a cookout.

But family cookouts have stopped, since Mr. Pyatt lost his mobility with the onset of Pulmonary Fibrosis -- a terminal illness causing progressive scarring of the lung. Now that The SCOOTER Store has given him the power wheelchair, Mr. Pyatt and his family will hold barbeques again. Mrs. Pyatt strongly believes "that getting him back outside is going to lift his spirits and be a very important part of him fighting the illness."
