The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Center For Creative Leadership Launch National Training Program for Nonprofit Leaders
Date:6/16/2008

Central New York Is First Of Nine Communities To Participate

In Fellowship Program To Prepare Next Generation of Professionals

PRINCETON, N.J. and GREENSBORO, N.C., June 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has joined with the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) to launch a national program to train the next generation of nonprofit leaders. The Ladder to Leadership program aims to boost the skills and capabilities of early- to mid-level professionals working in health and health-related organizations in nine U.S. communities so they will be well-poised to become executives as the current the generation of nonprofit leaders begins to retire. Over the next four years, 270 fellows - 30 in each community - will be selected to participate in the 16-month training.

"Nonprofit organizations are a critical part of health care and service delivery in this country. It is important we work with current leaders to build a pipeline of qualified future CEOs and Executive Directors, so we do not lose the vision and capacity needed to continue to do this work effectively in the future," said Sallie Petrucci George, Program Officer at the RWJF. "We are committed to investing in tomorrow's nonprofit leaders to make sure that they receive the training they need to best serve those at-risk communities."

The nonprofit sector, like many industries and sectors, is facing an impending exodus of senior leaders who will be retiring in the coming years. A study by the Bridgespan Group estimated that by 2016, nonprofit groups will need approximately 80,000 new senior managers each year. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there were 1.4 million nonprofit organizations in the United States as of 2006.

The program will be phased in over the next four years. Participating communities include: central New York (nine counties surrounding Syracuse, Ithaca, and Utica); Cleveland, O.H.; Birmingham, A.L.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Eastern N.C. (specific area to be determined); Portland, O.R.; the mid south (Western T.N., Eastern A.R., Northern M.S.); New Jersey (specific area to be determined); and Starr County, T.X.

The central New York region, the first community to launch the program, is now accepting applications for fellows through July 1. The Community Health Foundation of Central and Western New York is a local partner helping RWJF and CCL recruit fellows and promote the program in the central New York area.

These nine communities were chosen for a variety of reasons, including census and other demographic information, community-based needs for public health leadership development, and commitment of community partners.

"We believe this program will have a powerful and lasting impact on individual leaders and their organizations," said Karen Dyer, Director of CCL's Education and Nonprofit Sector. "Fellows will be taught a range of skills, from how to build and manage a team to problem-solving and networking. The three-part curriculum includes a mixture of face-to-face training sessions, individualized executive coaching, and team project work all within the context of the communities in which these leaders work."

Fellows who are chosen will be asked to commit approximately 18 to 25 days to the project over the 16-month period.

To become a fellow, applicants must demonstrate a record of accomplishment within the nonprofit sector, potential for leadership in the nonprofit health or health care field, and a proven commitment to serving at-risk groups.
