The Physicians at Plastic Surgery Center Each Have Something to Celebrate This March
Date:3/31/2015

Scotch Plains, NJ (PRWEB) March 31, 2015

Dr. Russell Ashinoff is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the Institute for Advanced Reconstruction. He was recently quoted in an Asbury Park Press article about Lymphedema. This condition is caused by lymphatic issues, causing fluid retention and tissue swelling. Dr. Ashinoff is one of few surgeons performing the procedure to relieve and / or improve lymphedema symptoms.

“The goal of our surgical procedure is to improve or alleviate the symptoms of lymphedema. The goal is to improve the intrinsic drainage of lymphatic fluid from the limb. We still believe the therapy portion (massage, compression garments) is very important, even post operatively,” said Dr. Ashinoff.

Dr. Andrew Elkwood, also a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the practice, recently changed an ICU nurse’s life for the better. The patient was a 50-year-old mother of three had been referred to Dr. Elkwood for breast reconstruction surgery. When she went to her appointment with Dr. Elkwood, he noticed that she was wearing a mechanical shoulder brace. Dr. Elkwood, along with a team of surgeons, was determined to get his patient’s arm functioning again. They completed a double mastectomy, breast reconstruction, hysterectomy and shoulder surgery.

Today, his patient is able to live without the mechanical brace. Although she is in the midst of chemotherapy for her recovery and is feeling some shoulder pain, she says, “I am no longer scared and apprehensive. I feel enough time has passed that I’m over the hump and I’m very hopeful. From Day 1, Dr. Elkwood was responsible for giving me hope. ‘You’re going to get through this’ he told me.” Later, “Dr. Elkwood feels he and I were destined to meet because he was able to do my breast reconstruction and fix my shoulder, for which I had no hope. He needed medical illustrator, which I originally studied in college and was my profession before becoming a nurse.” She works for Dr. Elkwood, now, doing medical illustrations.

Plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Azra Ashraf, is on a medical mission in Pakistan offering reconstructive services to acid burn and bomb blast victims.

Dr. Ashraf says, “Pakistan is in an unstable country which directly compromises the lives of its citizens, including access to healthcare. As someone who holds a degree in public health (international health) I’ve dedicated my career to the development of women’s health. I am joining a team of British plastic surgeons, helping to reconstruct acid burn victims and blast injury survivors.”

This is not her first medical mission, as Dr. Ashraf has been on one lead by Dr. Mohammed Ali Jawad once before. Dr. Jawad is known for his 2012 Academy Award winning documentary, “Saving Face”. This documentary focused on acid attack victims.

Peripheral nerve specialist, Dr. Matthew Kaufman, at The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction at The Plastic Surgery Center, was able to help a Rutgers University cheerleader solve her 55-week long headache.

When other doctors heard this young patient’s story of how a fellow cheerleader accidently fell on her face six months prior, ultimately breaking her nose, Dr. Kaufman listened. Dr. Kaufman tried a temporary nerve block delivered with several injections to her eyebrow area as well as the base of her skull. After only minutes, she felt normal. With that came the tears from her parents, relieved that their daughter’s pain was no longer.

Dr. Kaufman performed Nerve Decompression surgery on the patient and with success, she said, “It was the most enjoyable experience I can think of. From the consultation to the follow up, everyone was so pleasant and concerned. I wasn’t scared for the surgery. I was excited.”

The advanced equipment and techniques presented by The Plastic Surgery Center offer cutting edge cosmetic and reconstructive procedures and have developed a number of innovative surgical techniques not available at many other facilities in the world.
