'The Patient's Guide to Vasectomy Reversal' Now Available for Free for Increasing Number of Men Requesting the Procedure

in the scrotum, we can now perform the procedure with a much smaller incision, using newer microsurgical techniques.  This new technique reduces the time required to reverse a vasectomy from about 4 hours to between 2 to 2-1/2 hours."

Because the operation, called a vasovasostomy, is faster and less disruptive to tissue, recovery is faster and patients experience less post-operative pain, Fisch says.  The time savings translate into lower costs for the patients.  

When performed by a skilled surgeon, the vasovasostomy procedure results in sperm returning to the semen in between 85% to 97% of men.  About 50% of couples subsequently achieve a pregnancy.  (Another form of vasectomy reversal, called a vasoepididymostomy, has lower success rates.)
