The Mount Sinai Hospital Ranked in Top 25 of Best Children's Hospitals in Two Specialties by U.S. News & World Report

For the first time, U.S. News & World Report has ranked The Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital among the best children’s hospitals in the country.

New York (Vocus) June 4, 2010 -- For the first time, U.S. News & World Report has ranked The Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital among the best children’s hospitals in the country. In the 2010-11 edition of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals,” Mount Sinai ranked in the top 25, out of nearly 100 hospitals participating, in two key specialties: gastroenterology and kidney diseases.

“Kravis Children’s Hospital is a world-class facility providing exceptional patient care,” said Wayne Keathley, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Mount Sinai Hospital. “These rankings are a significant accomplishment. We look forward to further advancements in the ranking of these two specialties, and all the others.”

Mount Sinai was ranked 25th in gastroenterology and 24th in kidney diseases, after having no specific rank in previous years. U.S. News & World Report partnered with the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) to conduct a 75-page online survey among 170 standalone pediatric centers or children’s hospitals within hospitals. Of the hospitals contacted, 96 provided information. The rankings are determined from three key criteria: reputation, patient outcomes, and care-related indicators such as infection-control programs, surgical volume, and nurse-patient ratio. Criteria specific to each specialty were liver transplant survival for gastroenterology and kidney transplant survival, biopsy complications, and dialysis management for kidney diseases.

“The Kravis Children’s Hospital offers services designed to meet the unique physical and emotional needs of newborns, children, adolescents, and their families, and we are dedicated to ensuring that these patients live long, healthy lives,” said Lisa Satlin, MD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. “We are proud to be recognized for our efforts.”

The Mount Sinai Hospital ranked 19th nationally overall in the 2009-10 “America’s Best Hospitals” issue, with high scores in 11 of 16 specialties examined by U.S. News & World Report. Mount Sinai was named on the magazine’s elite list of "Honor Roll" hospitals.

About The Mount Sinai Medical Center

The Mount Sinai Medical Center encompasses both The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The Mount Sinai Hospital, founded in 1852, is a 1,171-bed tertiary- and quaternary-care teaching facility and one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most-respected voluntary hospitals. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked The Mount Sinai Hospital among the nation’s top 20 hospitals based on reputation, patient safety, and other patient-care factors. Nearly 60,000 people were treated at Mount Sinai as inpatients last year, and approximately 530,000 outpatient visits took place.

Established in 1968, Mount Sinai School of Medicine is one of few medical schools embedded in a hospital in the United States. It has more than 3,400 faculty in 32 departments and 15 institutes, and ranks among the top 20 medical schools both in National Institute of Health funding and by U.S. News & World Report. The school received the 2009 Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Association of American Medical Colleges.
