The MS Center of Atlanta Partners with Georgia Partnership for TeleHealth
Date:2/22/2013

(PRWEB) February 22, 2013

A significant number of patients in Georgia lack access to physicians knowledgeable about their disease or illness. This is true not only in rural areas, but also in many urban areas for certain specialties. Patients pay a significant price, travel great distances, to see their physician. Many with disabling diseases have no means of transportation. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a prime example where the majority of specialists are in the metro Atlanta area.

The MS Center of Atlanta, along with the NMSS (National Multiple Sclerosis Society), are dedicated to remove all barriers to patient care. The Center is proud to team up with GPT (Georgia Partnership of Telehealth) and Dr. Brian Griner to set up the first dedicated telehealth center for MS in Valdosta, Georgia. Dr. Griner is a Primary Care Physician and Dr. Jeffrey English along with the Centers other staff neurologist are on the MS Center side of this partnership. Patients will be able to see their MS specialist immediately from a primary care facility without traveling 4.5 hours (each way). The Center is to have sites across Georgia and hope the future will allow such care directly from every primary care physician's office.

Separately Dr. English is developing similar relationships for concussion management through SCI-Atlanta (Sports Concussion Institute at Atlanta). Athletes with suspected concussion will be able to access comprehensive care from their local physician with follow-up directly at their school. The focus on safety for the injured athlete involves education, removal from play, and return only when it is 100% safe. Many areas lack physicians trained in concussion, a mild form of a traumatic brain injury. Every athlete deserves access to comprehensive care by physician's knowledgeable in the ever growing science of concussion. In Georgia, our relationship with GPT, local doctors, and schools will allow this to happen for everyone.

Matt Jansen, Executive Director for Georgia partnership for TeleHealth stated, "Dr. Griner and Dr. English are developing an integrative system of care between Primary and Specialty care their patients using telemedicine. This is the future of primary care for patients with limited access."

About MSCA:
MSCA was founded in 2001 by William H. Stuart, M.D., a leading specialist in MS and neurology. The center is a comprehensive health care practice devoted to controlling the chronic, lifelong illness of MS.

Since its inception, the center has taken a progressive approach to therapies and applies an aggressive treatment model in its mission to enhance the lives of MS patients and their families. Through its clinical programs, research projects and quality of life care, it has fast become a leading center of excellence in the field.

In 2003, MSCA became a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, giving the center a new structure to provide a better level of care to patients, especially those who are disadvantaged. This status allows MSCA to accept charitable contributions earmarked for research and new treatments.

With an intense, 16-year focus on MS, as part of a medical career that spans nearly 45 years, Dr. Stuart helped bring pivotal MS clinical drug trials to Atlanta in the early 1990s, giving patients access to new treatments for this debilitating disease.

MSCA has an exceptional staff of 9 neurologists, 2 nurse practitioners, 7 registered nurses, and dozens of support specialists and staff to service the needs of a growing patient base. The center primarily serves patients from the Southeast, with patients from 28 states and 118 of Georgia's 159 counties.
