During the week of December 6, 2012, more than 1,000 Nexium bone injury lawsuits were centralized into an MDL in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. (In re. Nexium (Esomerprazole) Products Liability Litigation, MDL Docket No. 2404) The plaintiffs in these lawsuits claim that the drug caused osteoporosis, loss of bone density and/or bone fractures. Additionally, they also claim that AstraZeneca, its manufacturer, knew about the risks of broken bones but did not disclose the risks to the consumers so that they could continue selling more Nexium.
Nexium is a drug prescribed to treat the symptoms of acid reflux disease, which typically include persistent heartburn on 2 or more days per week. For many, Nexium is also prescribed to heal damage to the esophagus called erosive esophagitis. However, Nexium has been alleged to cause bone fractures and low magnesium levels if taken for a long period of time. The most severe side effects of Nexium allegedly include osteoporosis, bone deterioration and esophageal cancer.
Why Does Nexium Cause Hip Fractures?
Researchers theorize that the connection between Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), the type of drug that Nexium is, and hip fractures is due to the reduction of acid in the stomach which reduces the amount of calcium dissolved in the stomach and absorbed into the body. They may also interfere with the body’s ability to break down and rebuild bone by its intrusion on the acid production, which increases bone fragility.
In April 2012, MHRA published an article revealing that there is recent epidemiological evidence of an increased risk of fracture with long-term use of PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors), including Nexium.
MHRA studies show that there is a 44% increase in the risk of hip fractures for individuals over the age of 50. The study also shows that long term, high dose users had two and a half times greater risk of hip fractures than non-users. Men pose a greater risk than women for hip fractures. AstraZeneca claims that these increased risks of hip fractures is noting more than a coincidence. Their disregard for their consumers makes them potentially liable for any hip fractures caused by Nexium.
