It's all very well to say things about how lap band surgery is better than gastric bypass, or even show facts and figures about who loses weight and how much. As human beings, says Dr. Joseph Naim of the Lap Band Surgery Center, it is sometimes easier to see the effects of lap band surgery rather than just reading dry facts. Apparently, the Business Insider agrees, because it posted “Inspiring Before and After Weight Loss Pictures” (businessinsider.com/before-and-after-weight-loss-lapband-surgery-2013-5?op=1) on May 17, 2013, showing some real-life weight loss pictures of people who didn't mind showing how much weight came off after surgery.
The Business Insider article was rather short, just a few paragraphs about the growing popularity of lap band surgery, New Jersey Governor Christie's decision to be fitted with a gastric band, and the Lap Band Forum, or lapbandtalk.com. This can help patients to engage in real discussions with other fellow patients about the process of losing weight, including pre-surgery and post-surgery tips, and how much it might cost. This can help patients not feel so isolated, because even though do-it-yourself weight loss is a popular topic in America, continual weight gain and the need for surgery do not tend to be as popular.
The prevalence of shows like “Biggest Loser”, says Lap Band Surgery Center's Dr. Naim, shows that people really want to see other, normal people losing more than just a few pounds. In the same way, it's also necessary to get past the mental road block that trying yet one more time to lose weight will actually have results this time. This is sometimes called 'giving yourself permission' to lose weight, and sometimes it just comes down to seeing someone else lose weight or get fit in the way that you'd like to.
One good example of this, besides those on the Business Insider article, comes from a June 7, 2013 post by The Australian, called “Older and Fitter” (theaustralian.com.au/sport/sport-active/older-and-fitter/story-fnc9wiz4-1226658883761). A former high school teacher in his 50's, with weight and self-esteem issues, was able to gain mobility and lose weight. He began with high blood pressure and discouragement, and no desire to go to a gym surrounded by those fitter than he was. Seeing results, said the teacher's personal trainer, can shift most people out of the mindset of “this won't work” to a more positive mindset of just getting it done. Older people, said trainer Robbie Hardy, tend to get good results from a physical training program, despite the loss of muscle mass and increased rates for heart disease, because they will listen to the advice of experts like doctors and trainers.
Since candidates for lap band surgery have more to lose than the 35 pounds lost by Tony James, the retired teacher, it's sometimes even more helpful to hear about those who have lost amazing amounts. Most of the Business Insider photos focused on those who had lost around 100 pounds of weight, but one lady lost 203 pounds. Of course, it's important to realize that not every patient loses so much, but just knowing the possibilities of weight loss via lap band can help.
