ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month, The HealthCentral Network's (http://www.HealthCentral.com) MyDiabetesCentral.com has launched an interactive information center with leading resources on pre-diabetes and diabetes risk, including an assessment where users can gauge their risk of type 2 diabetes. HealthCentral's Diabetes Awareness Month center is available at http://www.healthcentral.com/diabetes/awareness-month-2008.html.

"The growing global epidemic of diabetes is an underappreciated problem of world-wide dimensions," said Dr. William Quick, endocrinologist and MyDiabetesCentral.com expert. "It's a risk to health and indeed to life for those people diagnosed with diabetes, and an added burden on their families And for society as a whole, healthcare costs for diabetes are exploding, and indirect costs such as loss of productivity loom larger in the future."

Diabetes affects more than 23 million people in the US and more than 90% of diagnoses are type 2. "As health-care providers, patients, and families, we need to work to increase the awareness that diabetes is a chronic disease that can be successfully treated, and often times delayed or prevented," Quick added.
