The Fundamentals of Sensor Systems and Their Real-world Applications are Revealed in “Sensor Technologies”—Released by Apress Media
Date:1/14/2014

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 14, 2014

In a world that is becoming increasingly sensorized and monitored, the implications of sensor technologies on our personal and social lives are steadily rising. The applications of sensors in healthcare and the environment have the potential to transform these domains in groundbreaking ways. The development of the glucose biosensor transformed the lives of millions of diabetic patients, and the digital age is constantly producing opportunities for similar devices. “Sensor Technologies: Healthcare, Wellness and Environmental Applications”—newly published by Apress Media in partnership with Intel—provides an accessible primer for anyone who wants to understand sensors and the technical and non-technical challenges involved in developing sensor applications.

Aimed at researchers, engineers, clinicians and students, “Sensor Technologies” explores the key aspects of wired, wireless and discrete sensors using real-world illustrations. Author Dr. Michael J. McGrath is a senior researcher with Intel Labs Europe and draws on research carried out by Intel or joint academic research programs. Along with co-author Dr. Cliodhna Ní Scanaill, Dr. McGrath guides the reader from the formulation of the research question, through the design and validation process, to the deployment and management phase of sensor applications. Regulatory and social considerations regarding medical sensor devices are discussed, as well as the many possibilities that will arise from the merging of sensor networks and cloud-based data analytics.

In combination with increasing wireless connectivity and the rise of the Internet of Things, sensors are primed to empower citizens, doctors and researchers. They can provide critical information about our bodies and the world around us, whether it’s an asthma sufferer monitoring local air quality or a clinician being able to detect the onset of disease at the earliest possible juncture. “Sensor Technologies: Healthcare, Wellness and Environmental Applications” is the definitive handbook for those following the progress of sensors into their most transformative age.

Thanks to the open access publishing partnership between Apress and Intel, the eBook version of “Sensor Technologies” is freely available to download and share under the ApressOpen program. For more information about the book, please visit http://www.apress.com/9781430260134.
