The Empire State Healthcare Coalition Voices Concern Over the Affordable Health Choices Act

NEW YORK, July 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Empire State Healthcare Coalition expresses its opposition to the Affordable Health Choice Act, which creates a national, government-run health plan to compete with private insurers. The Coalition is concerned that such a public plan would eliminate free market efficiency and reduce healthcare quality.

The Empire State Healthcare Coalition (the "Coalition") is not-for-profit organization formed by New York State brokers and consultants focused on keeping healthcare affordable and accessible to those who reside in New York State. The Coalition supports the initiatives of the private healthcare sector, including brokers and consultants, and health plan commitment to care coordination, disease management, and overall wellness and preventative healthcare.

The Coalition supports the Act's goals of providing equal access to healthcare regardless of pre-existing conditions and also supports a mandate upon employers to provide medical coverage to all employees or be taxed. The Coalition also supports reducing administrative costs, reining- in prescription drug costs, and encouraging provider cost transparency.

The Coalition is concerned about the public plan's potential negative consequences which will result in the dismantling of effective employer based health and wellness coverage and an increase in both private coverage costs and the federal deficit. The government-run plan would exacerbate the inequitable cost burden borne by privately insured individuals as a result of the inadequate reimbursement rates that Medicare and Medicaid pay to hospitals and physicians. The Coalition fears that such cost shifting will ultimately result in a nationalized single payer healthcare system, which it strongly opposes.
