The Discovery House Employees Volunteer at Local Rescue Mission

Reseda, Calif (PRWEB) July 29, 2014

The Los Angeles based drug and alcohol rehab, The Discovery House recently participated in a community program that helps homeless families in the San Fernando Valley. The group of volunteers partnered with the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission to provide a hot meal to individuals in need.

The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission offers emergency shelter and services for homeless individuals and families. The mission's Family Emergency Shelter provides housing and basic needs such as food and clothing. The program works to help individuals build skills needed to move forward, through life skills classes, parenting classes, job placement, and continuing education.

The Rescue Mission also operates a Rescue S.O.S. (Survival Outreach Services), which provides services for those still living on the street with a mobile shower unit, clean clothes, and meals. San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission partners with organizations such as community groups, churches, treatment centers, and doctors to provide individuals with other services they may need, including mental health treatment and substance abuse rehab. The Rescue Mission is a faith-based, Christian organization that works to care for the whole person--body, mind, and spirit.

The Discovery House employees volunteered at the Rescue Mission by preparing and serving a hot meal for families participating in the emergency shelter program. The experience was a positive one for the treatment center's employees. Tom Whiting, Executive Director of the Discovery House, is proud of the work his employees are doing in the community.

"It is so important for us to get out and volunteer in the community," said Whiting. "There are many needs all around us, and while our treatment center works to meet substance abuse treatment needs, there are so many wonderful groups that help with other basic human needs. It is our pleasure to partner with organizations such as the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission."

Hundreds of thousands of American families struggle to find proper shelter. According to the National Center on Family Homelessness, more than 1.6 million children are homeless, and one in 45 children experience homelessness in America each year. Homelessness causes delayed development, health issues, and emotional and behavioral problems. To learn more about the needs of the homeless, or the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission, visit
