The Costs of Indoor Allergies and Asthma Continue to Rise
Date:5/3/2017

As the gross layer of yellow, dust-like film known as pollen coats outdoor furniture and vehicles, people’s attention often turns to allergies and asthma triggers. Even those lucky few that rarely have allergies are often triggered by the prevalence of pollen in the environment during this time of year. For people suffering with asthma, pollen season can be particularly troublesome. However, indoor particle pollution is an issue throughout the entire year, not just when it becomes visible during pollen season.

In the United States, an alarmingly high 50 million people suffer from allergies and 25 million people suffer with asthma. These numbers increase every year and many people with allergies go undiagnosed due to over-the-counter treatments or just silently suffering through allergy season. Asthma cost $56 billion in the US due to medical costs, lost productivity, and early deaths when measured in 2007 (and the occurrence of asthma has risen largely since that time). In productivity loss and medical costs, allergies cost the United States $13 billion per year as of 2011.

Unfortunately, there is no way to stop people from developing allergies or asthma. However, the symptoms of allergies and asthma can be heavily reduced which will not only reduce the costs, but reduce how much people suffer with their symptoms. While avoiding asthma and allergy triggers is important for controlling symptoms, taking efforts to reduce exposure to air pollutants can cut down or eliminate allergy and asthma symptoms.

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology publishes the pollen count across the country every day. If pollen and mold values are high for the day, it is best for asthma and allergy sufferers to stay indoors. While indoors, allergens and asthma triggers can be drastically reduced by regularly changing HVAC air filters (and using a filter with a MERV rating of 11 or higher). Additionally, allergy and asthma sufferers should avoid burning candles, reduce pet dander, vacuum/clean frequently, and eliminate mold/mildew.

By paying attention to asthma and allergy triggers throughout the year (not just when pollen makes itself visible in the spring), symptoms can be controlled and costs can be reduced. Proactively fighting particles that cause asthma and allergy triggers can make indoor air a lot less scary. FilterEasy would like to help asthma and allergy sufferers reduce their symptoms indoors by offering free air filters in light of Air Quality Awareness Week. They are offering these free HVAC air filters at FilterEasy.com/NoScareAir
