Date:12/9/2008

An action-oriented special unit devised to provide the public with timely government and regulatory information

MALVERN, Pa., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Association for the Advancement of Wound Care (AAWC) has created a formal strategy for providing wound care clinicians, regulators, health insurance payors and patients timely information related to government and health policy issues. The Wound Care Specialty Council (WocSpec) is a strategically-linked collection of departments that process and disseminate critical information to the wound care community. Recently, WocSpec's Regulatory Department, led by Peggy Dotson, RN, and Scott LaRaus, PT, PhD has responded to several Medicare proposed regulations.

Comments were sent to Dr. Barry Straub from the Coverage and Analysis Group at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) concerning the definitions and benefits of wound care biological therapy. AAWC has offered to facilitate an expert panel to discuss the topic in detail with members of CMS.

The group also posted comments to Stephen Boren, MD, Medical Director for Wisconsin Physician Services, a Medicare contractor, concerning a draft wound care coverage policy that would have significant impact on clinicians and their patients. AAWC offered its members' expertise to assist Dr. Boren and his staff in finalizing the policy.

AAWC has also offered its clinical and policy expertise to the AMA Physician Consortium on the development of quality measures involving wound care and to CMS concerning wound care-related quality measures to be included in the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative. AAWC, through the creation of WocSpec, has significantly elevated its activity on the national landscape as an advocate for patients and providers.

Active Departments of WocSpec include Clinical Guidelines, Provider Relations, Inter-societal Relations,
