The Amerigroup Foundation 'Breakfast of Champions' Honors Community Leaders with Boxing Champion Evander Holyfield

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Dec. 17, 2009 /PRNewswire/ -- The Amerigroup Foundation today honored 12 Hampton Roads-area non-profit organizations at its first 'Breakfast of Champions' awards celebration in Virginia Beach. Serving as mistress of ceremonies was local television personality, Barbara Ciara, managing editor and anchor of WTKR NewsChannel 3. The breakfast keynote speaker was world-renowned 'champion' and four-time heavyweight boxing title-holder - Evander Holyfield.

Addressing a packed house of Amerigroup 'Real Caring' volunteers and local community organizations at company headquarters, Mr. Holyfield said he felt right at home: "Having started my boxing career in Hampton Roads I will always have an affinity for this community and the organizations who serve the area's most needy. There was a time, in my youth, when I was among those in need and it is because of volunteers like those recognized today, I was able to accomplish great things. The Amerigroup Foundation should be commended for acknowledging how these everyday champions help foster and nourish world-class champions."

The following local charities received a $1,000 grant from the Amerigroup Foundation, for their exemplary grassroots efforts in the community:

  • Alzheimer's Association - Southeastern Virginia Chapter
  • Chesapeake Health Investment Program (CHIP)
  • Chesapeake Service Systems
  • Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters
  • F.A.C.T - Families of Autistic Children in Tidewater
  • ForKids
  • Samaritan House
  • Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia
  • Sun Wheelers, Inc.
  • The Up Center
  • Urban League of Hampton Roads
  • Western Tidewater Free Clinic.

"What better way to recognize the anniversary of Amerigroup Corporation and continue in our belief of giving back to those who support the people we serve," said John E. Littel, Chairman of the Amerigroup Foundation. "Staying true to our community focus, we feel it is essential that local organizations receive our gratitude and recognition," he added.

Special honorees were also selected for: Outstanding Support of Children, Outstanding Support of Those with Disabilities, and Outstanding Support of Seniors or Adults in Need. In addition, the Amerigroup Foundation recognized individual community contributors: Barbara Ciara - "Outstanding Media Support," Virginia Beach Mayor William Sessoms - "Outstanding Community Leader," and businessman Bruce Thompson - "Outstanding Community Visionary."

"I'm proud to be a part of honoring charitable involvement at the local level," said Mayor Sessoms. "I want to offer congratulations to these organizations, as well as a 'thank you' to the Amerigroup Foundation for its support and involvement in Virginia Beach. Amerigroup has been a terrific community partner for 15 years, and we're very grateful for its commitment to our city and region."
