The American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD) and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Partner to Increase Accessibility for Women with Disabilities at Mammogram Facilities in the DC Metro Area
Date:2/22/2010

ROCKVILLE, Md., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AAHD is the recipient of a grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure entitled "Project Accessibility: Removing Barriers for Women with Disabilities" to increase accessibility of mammogram facilities in the DC Metro area. The purpose of the grant is to increase breast cancer screening among women with disabilities and women from various cultures by administering a survey tool to assess the accessibility (environmental, architectural, communication, attitudinal, linguistic) barriers in mammography facilities located in the District of Columbia, Prince George's County in Maryland, Alexandria City in Virginia, and Fairfax, Loudon, Arlington, and Prince William Counties in Virginia.

Women with disabilities are as likely to be at risk for breast cancer as women without disabilities.  Often times, women with disabilities face certain obstacles in getting their mammograms.

As part of this project and to learn more about barriers women with disabilities face in getting their mammograms, AAHD has developed a Breast Cancer Women's Survey to help gain a better understanding of what types of barriers are keeping women with disabilities from getting their mammograms.  This survey is confidential and can be performed on-line at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/G77ZLF3

If you are a woman with a disability and reside in Washington, DC or the surrounding six Metro areas (listed above), we would sincerely appreciate if you could take five minutes to complete our on-line survey.  You will be helping AAHD and Susan G. Komen for the Cure   learn more about barriers women with disabilities encounter when getting their mammograms and work towards changing policy so all women have access to quality mammogram screening.

Please visit the AAHD website at www.aahd.us to learn more about "Project Accessibility."  For more information contact Janet Kreitman, MSW, MAPA at jkreitman@aahd.us or 301-545-6140 or Roberta Carlin, MS, JD at rcarlin@aahd.us  or 301-545-6140 ext 206.

AAHD is a national nonprofit association located in Rockville, MD.  The mission of AAHD is to advance health promotion and wellness initiatives for people with disabilities through research, public awareness, advocacy and education.
