Dr. Middleton strongly focuses on the consultation and feels that the consultation is one of the most crucial and important steps in the rhinoplasty experience. According to Dr. Middleton, the success of the procedure is dependent upon how open a patient is with their doctor and advocates for the importance of complete candidness in regards to health, surgical goals and lifestyle.

The consultation also serves as a vital piece of education for the patient. Dr. Middleton explains that during the consultation the doctor should examine the nose and discuss the various factors involved with nose surgery. This portion of the consultation serves as a means of education to help explain how the procedure will be performed, however it still remains a patients duty to fully understand what the rhinoplasty experience will entail.

In addition to the key factors of preparation outlined by Dr. Middleton, the Canadian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (CSAPS) also sets guidelines for patients considering rhinoplasty. They strongly advise that patients be of at least 16 years of age or older to ensure that the patient has stopped growing to ensure maximum results.

Furthermore, patients should ensure their doctors credentials. In Canada, there are no requirements to perform cosmetic surgery. So when choosing a cosmetic surgeon its vital that a patient understand their entire education background. Dr. Middleton, a board certified surgeon himself, has practiced in both Canada and the United States, where he underwent several years of specialized training.
