Thailand Prepares to Illuminate for the 2013 Loi Krathong Festival
Date:11/19/2013

(PRWEB) November 19, 2013

Loi Krathong is a long established and immensely popular tradition in Thailand, and thousands of people celebrate the festival every year. The name of the festival can be translated to mean ‘Floating Decoration’, which originates from the custom of making an attractive decoration that is then floated on a river, lake, or even the sea. The decorations are traditionally made using a slice of trunk from a banana tree, which is then decorated with leaves, flowers and candles.

The festival takes place every year on the evening of the full moon in the 12th lunar month, which typically falls in November on the western calendar. This year, the festival will be held on 17th November, although TAT has scheduled a number of events to take place over a nine-day period starting on 10th November. For instance, those located in Bangkok can enjoy a spectacular light and sound show at the modern retail complex known as Asiatique, The Riverfront. The show will be accompanied by fireworks and an orchestra, and it will take place from 15th November to 17th November.

It is believed the origins of Loi Krathong stem from Buddhism, and that the festival provided the opportunity to pay respectful thanks to Phra Mae Khongkha, the Goddess of Water. Many Thai people believe the krathongs carry away their bad luck, which in turn helps to bring them good fortune. The festival has also become associated with love, and it is common to see couples floating their krathongs while making a wish for their future life together. Clearly, the festival can be enjoyed by both locals and tourists, and it is truly magical to observe the hundreds of krathongs, with their candles sparkling, as they gently drift along beneath the full moon.

Loi Krathong is celebrated throughout Thailand, and anyone visiting the country during the festival period will find celebrations taking place. Indeed, those guests staying in one of Krabi Riviera’s luxury holiday villas won’t need to travel far to participate in the festivities. The villas are all situated in the Ao Nang area in Krabi province- click here to discover some photos of Krabi, and each year people gather on Ao Nang beach in order to float their illuminated krathongs on the Andaman Sea. The beach is a very scenic location, and it provides the perfect setting for sharing in the joy of Loi Krathong.

Events of this nature are very special to Krabi Riviera as the company is committed to promoting tourism in Thailand, together with ensuring their guests enjoy a memorable holiday. The company’s portfolio of holiday villas is truly outstanding, and all their properties enjoy very high standards in style and comfort.

The beautiful Kingdom of Thailand has many charming customs, and events such as Loi Krathong certainly demonstrate how traditions are valued and kept alive in this fascinating country.
