VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Aug. 21, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- The AMERIGROUP Foundation today announced that State Rep. Sylvester Turner of Houston has been honored with its "Champion for Children" award.
The award is part of the AMERIGROUP Foundation's national program recognizing outstanding public advocacy efforts by government and community leaders in improving the health and well-being of children throughout our nation.
"Our goal is to work together with local leaders and citizens for the benefit of healthier communities, and that starts with children," said Aileen McCormick, CEO of AMERIGROUP Community Care in Texas. "Rep. Turner and his efforts represent terrific examples of what we can all accomplish when we keep the end result in mind. Rep. Turner has been a true champion for the Children's Health Insurance Program, and through his leadership and commitment the Legislature has increased access to health insurance for Texas children in need. To commemorate Rep. Turner's commitment to children and their families, the AMERIGROUP Foundation will present a $2,500 contribution to Brookhollow Baptist Church/Ralph Douglas West Scholarship Ministry. Rep.
