A recent profile by a KTRK-TV, a local television news affiliate, is bringing to light a new technique available at Houston weight loss surgery practice Texas Laparoscopic Consultants that improves the recovery process and the aesthetic results for patients who undergo surgical treatment for morbid obesity.
(Vocus) November 18, 2009 -- Houston-based Texas Laparoscopic Consultants is a bariatric surgery practice that offers a new procedure designed to help people lose large amounts of weight with a quick recovery and no visible scarring. And the community is taking notice. A recent news feature on Houston ABC affiliate KTRK-TV Channel 13 brought some light onto the practice’s use of single-incision weight loss surgery. Texas Laparoscopic Consultants is the only practice in the area that is performing this technique, and, in an interview with ABC-13’s Healthcheck reporter Christi Myers, Dr. Sherman Yu says single-incision surgery can work wonders in patients who undergo procedures like gastric sleeve in Houston. “With this newer procedure, people are actually losing just as much weight as a gastric bypass – but the risks are about half of a gastric bypass because we’re not rerouting any of the intestine.”
Bariatric surgery procedures are performed to help patients who are considered morbidly obese – typically 80 to 100 pounds overweight – lose large amounts of weight and reduce the risk of developing severe health problems. While serving an important medical need, patients who undergo obesity surgery often have to experience long recovery processes and visible scars from the procedure. But Dr. Yu says that for weight loss surgery options such as gastric sleeve and the LAP-BAND® in Houston, single-incision surgery is changing that. “The incision is placed in the umbilicus to truly hide the incision. Sometimes for bands we place it where the band port is located. The main advantage is for cosmetics as traditional laparoscopic surgeries have anywhere from 5-6 incisions.” Dr. Yu says one small incision about two to five centimeters in diameter, usually made in the belly button, is all that’s needed. Compared with traditional methods, which can use a number of incisions spread throughout the abdomen, Dr. Yu says single-incision weight loss surgery can dramatically quicken recovery time and leave the scar completely hidden. “We have performed over 100 now and it is part of our standard technique for bands and sleeves. This is unique because often other surgeons are either just learning the basic technique, while we have advanced on to the next phase of minimally invasive surgery.”
Dr. Yu says single-incision weight loss surgery techniques are becoming more and more important because of the numbers of people who desperately need obesity treatment, but are put off by the recovery process and the prospects of surgical scars. The technique can be used with options such as gastric sleeve surgery - a procedure which removes about 60 to 70 percent of the stomach and restructures the remainder to form a tube shape - and adjustable gastric banding, which restricts the stomach to allow for less food intake and an earlier feeling of fullness.
Texas Laparoscopic Consultants and its team of weight loss surgeons in Houston say that safe and effective procedures such as single-incision bariatric surgery are important advances in a field that can truly help people fight the effects of morbid obesity and reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and other serious health conditions. Plus, the aesthetic benefits can go a long way in making people slim down and feel better about themselves. “People are losing… 60, 70, 80 percent of their excess body weight, but more importantly, what we focus on is their medical problems get better.”
