Tennis Elbow, Shin Splints and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Could Be a Thing of the Past Due to New Efforts with Sports Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Date:7/16/2009

The Andrews Institute brings national attention to sports musculoskeletal ultrasound, hosting their second sports musculoskeletal conference chaired by medical director and renowned sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews

Gulf Breeze, Fla. (Vocus) July 16, 2009 -- The second Sports Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Course hosted by the Andrews Institute will attract top physicians, surgeons and other professionals from around the country July 16-18, 2009. The three day course will cover the techniques and applications of diagnostic and interventional sports medicine/musculoskeletal ultrasound in major joints of the body related to sports medicine injuries.

With the first course selling out, the second course expects the same success with participants registered from around the globe. The conference will cover a range of sports musculoskeletal ultrasound including training for the shoulder, knee, elbow, hand, wrist, foot and ankle, and muscle/soft tissue injury. One unique aspect will include how NFL and Olympic physicians utilize this during games and practices and how it can make an immediate impact in the diagnosis of an injury.

Another exclusive trend that is taking hold in the sports world is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy. PRP is blood plasma with concentrated platelets. These platelets include bioactive proteins that initiate connective tissue healing such as bone, tendon and ligament regeneration and repair. PRP can be injected in tendons and ligaments all over the body, which can help with sports injuries and more specific injuries including tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints and many other damaged ligaments and tendons. Patients see significant improvement immediately which may eliminate the need for aggressive treatments such as long term medication or surgery. Andrews Institute physician Dr. Josh Hackel already employs this therapy on a number of local area patients.

Keynote speakers include the following physicians, athletic trainers and physical therapists:

  • James R. Andrews, MD, Andrews Institute, Gulf Breeze, Fla. - Course Chairman
  • Josh Hackel, MD, Andrews Institute, Gulf Breeze, Fla. - Course Chairman and Director
  • Antonio Bouffard, MD, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Mich. - Course Chairman
  • Jay Smith, MD, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
  • Joseph Cygan, ATC, United States Olympic Committee, Colorado Springs, Colo.

  • David M. Crane, MD
  • John McShane MD
  • John Dlugosz, RDMS
  • Patrick Meyers, BS, ARDMS, RVT, RDCS
  • Wayne Smith DPT, ATC, SCS

"The Andrews Institute has a primary focus on research and education related to cutting edge technologies," says Dr. Josh Hackel, primary care sports medicine physician and musculoskeletal ultrasound specialist at the Andrews Institute. "This conference will focus on this specific methodology in order to train other physicians to carryout this diagnostic tool in their own medical practices. What is discussed, utilized and taught in this course will have an instantaneous effect on the patients that are seen by these physicians gaining this unique expertise."

James R. Andrews, M.D., the renowned orthopaedic surgeon for whom the institute is named, will open the first session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2009.
