Telephone Nursing an Important Component of Managed Healthcare
Date:1/25/2008

COMPTCHE, Calif., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Wild Iris Medical Education, an online provider of continuing education for healthcare professionals, (http://www.wildirismedicaleducation.com) has just released a new course, "Telephone Triage." As more and more HMOs turn to telephone nursing or telehealth, the practice of appropriate disposition of health-related problems by trained RNs using guidelines or protocols has become a new subspecialty. Telephone triage interactions generally require assessment, patient education, and crisis intervention. When high standards are maintained, telephone triage in the HMO setting is a successful, highly appreciated, and integral part of the larger system. All successful nursing care hinges upon communication. In telephone triage, the challenge is to push the limits of what is possible and unique to this specialty. The manner of communication is as important as what is communicated.

Wild Iris Medical Education has produced a concise introduction to telephone nursing including best practices, areas of controversy, protocols, documentation forms, red flags, rules of thumb, and red herrings. The course is six contact hours.
