  • The directive is compulsory from 1 August 2009
  • It will now apply in full to trainee doctors along with other workers
  • It stipulates 11 hours continuous rest in 24 hours
  • Also 24 hours continuous rest in seven days (or 48 hrs in 14 days)
  • Trainee doctors must have a 20 minute break in work periods of over 6 hours
  • And entitlement to four weeks annual leave
  • The legal obligation for EWTD implementation is on hospital trusts
  • GPs do not fall within the remit of the EWTD because they are self-employed
  • However, some GPs are directly employed and are therefore covered by the directive
  • The Department of Health has invested £50m to support the directive
  • Visit the Healthcare workforce portal here for FAQs on the EWTD
  • Download the NHS Skills for Health Workforce Projects Team guide here
  • Team24 is well positioned to provide support to hospitals caught short by this directive
