New York law firm to represent executive board and individual union members as TSOs await word from Obama Administration on recognition of collective bargaining rights

New York (Lexis Nexis) April 15, 2009 -- Taubman Kimelman & Soroka, LLP, a New York law firm with a track record of success representing labor unions and their members with various legal challenges, has been retained by Local 2222 of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE).

AFGE Local 2222 is actively organizing Transportation Security Officers (TSOs), the passenger screeners and airport security professionals for the Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration, who are employed in each of the New York and New Jersey airports. To date, approximately 1,700 of the 7,000 TSOs in the region are currently members of AFGE Local 2222.

The AGFE is the largest federal employee union, representing 600,000 federal and D.C. government workers nationwide and overseas. Workers in virtually all functions of government at every federal agency depend upon AFGE for legal representation, legislative advocacy, technical expertise and informational services.

"When the Bush Administration and Congress formed the TSA in the aftermath of 9/11, they permitted some federal labor regulations to apply so these employees could unionize, but they refused to recognize TSA employees with collective bargaining rights," explained Philip Taubman, partner at Taubman Kimelman & Soroka. "However, during last year's presidential campaign, Pres. Obama pledged to grant collective bargaining to these important professionals who safeguard our security as we travel. It's anticipated that these rights, which would allow the union to negotiate a long-term employment agreement for all its members, will be recognized by the new director of the TSA when he or she is appointed soon."

According to Taubman, AFGE Local 2222 has retained his firm to represent the executive board in organizing TSOs in the area, work with individual members of the local in protecting their existing rights, and ultimately advise the local in the negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement with the TSA.

Taubman Kimelman & Soroka represents the interests of persons who have been injured as a result of the negligence of others, persons who have been victims of employment discrimination and persons who need representation for disciplinary or criminal matters. The firm, as part of its full representation philosophy, also represents individuals in real estate, matrimonial and wills and estate matters.
