Tattoo Studios in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld
Date:10/26/2013

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) October 27, 2013

Despite varying degrees of growth in the economy, business has been strong for the Tattoo Studios industry in Australia over the past five years. The evolution of popular culture has lifted tattooing from underground scenes and criminal associations and focused on tattoos as a form of art and expression. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Lauren Magner, “This has allowed tattoos to permeate many previously inaccessible echelons of society, etched onto the skin of members in various professions that include corporate management, personal services and teaching.” Demand for tattoos has also been driven by rapid advancements in technologies related to their removal, particularly that of lasers. Further, an increase in legislation surrounding tattoo and body piercing studios has made consumers more confident about the safety and hygiene conditions within the industry. This acceptance has translated to strong revenue growth over the past five years, at an annualised 4.7%. In 2013-14, revenue is expected to grow by 3.3% to $93.3 million.

As retailing industries in Australia struggle with subdued discretionary spending, the Tattoo Studios industry is flourishing. “Tattoos as a form of personal adornment have shown a greater resilience to decreased domestic fashion spending, as a service that cannot be imported and one that serves as a more enduring fashion statement,” says Magner. In addition to greater permanence, the tattoo has become symbolic of personal connections, with the popularity of matching tattoos and dedications to loved ones growing. Custom tattoos have far outperformed standardised flash tattoos in terms of demand, further enforcing the trend towards using tattoos for personal expression and art as opposed to dedication to an association, idol or cause.

The Tattoo Studios industry exhibits a low level of market share concentration, with no single operator commanding a significant share of revenue. As laser removal technology becomes increasingly advanced, consumers are expected to become more comfortable with having tattoos because they are perceived as less permanent. Tattoos will become more common and will be more culturally acceptable, further driving demand.
