According to IBISWorld industry analyst Lauren Magner, “This has allowed tattoos to permeate many previously inaccessible echelons of society, etched onto the skin of members in various professions that include corporate management, personal services and teaching.” Demand for tattoos has also been driven by rapid advancements in technologies related to their removal, particularly that of lasers. Further, an increase in legislation surrounding tattoo and body piercing studios has made consumers more confident about the safety and hygiene conditions within the industry. This acceptance has translated to strong revenue growth over the past five years, at an annualised 4.7%. In 2013-14, revenue is expected to grow by 3.3% to $93.3 million.
As retailing industries in Australia struggle with subdued discretionary spending, the Tattoo Studios industry is flourishing. “Tattoos as a form of personal adornment have shown a greater resilience to decreased domestic fashion spending, as a service that cannot be imported and one that serves as a more enduring fashion statement,” says Magner. In addition to greater permanence, the tattoo has become symbolic of personal connections, with the popularity of matching tattoos and dedications to loved ones growing.
