Tackle Gum Disease to Reduce Risk of Premature Birth, Warn Eludril and Elgydium
Date:1/24/2013

Bournemouth, Dorset (PRWEB) January 24, 2013

Oral health experts at Eludril and Elgydium are urging expectant mothers to reduce the risk of premature birth by getting treatment for gum disease. Their warning follows new research from America.

The new study showed that mothers-to-be who underwent a simple treatment for gum disease were 34 per cent less likely to give birth prematurely.

The research – published in the Journal of Periodontology (Vol. 83, No 12, Clinical Science) – was carried out by a team at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

It further confirms known links between gum disease and the premature birth of babies less than 37 weeks into pregnancy, say the manufacturers of Eludril mouthwash and Elgydium toothpaste.

They are urging expectant mothers to make use of the free NHS treatment that is available to pregnant women.

NHS-registered expectant mothers can claim free scaling and root planing treatment to gently scrape away the plaque that leads to gingivitis (gum disease) symptoms such as soreness or swelling in the gums.

“This treatment is quick and easy so it makes good sense for mothers to get their teeth and gums checked. Tackling gum disease early can reduce the likelihood of giving birth prematurely,” said a spokesperson for Eludril and Elgydium.

“With all the other pressures and worries of impending motherhood, it can be all too easy to forget something as simple as caring for your teeth and gums.

“But it would be foolish to ignore oral health when there are links to premature birth.”

Gum disease is commonplace, affecting millions of people at some point in their lives. Fortunately, it can be diagnosed and treated very easily.

Swollen or sore gums should be an early prompt to visit the dentist or hygienist.

People who ignore these early symptoms run the risk of bleeding gums, a sign that gingivitis has been present for some time.

Gingivitis can cause receding gums. In worst cases teeth may become so loose that they either fall out or have to be extracted.

The leading gingivitis treatment is chlorhexidine, recommended for decades by dental professionals all over the world.

Chlorhexidine is an important antibacterial ingredient in Eludril gingivitis (gum disease) mouthwash and Elgydium medicinal toothpaste.

Elgydium toothpaste can used every day to help prevent gum disease, tackling the oral bacteria that cause gingivitis.

Eludril menthol-flavoured mouthwash works in a similar way. The recommended dosage is 15ml (for adults and children aged over 6), diluted with lukewarm water using the measuring cup provided.

Eludril can also be used as a disinfectant for removable dentures. They should be soaked for an hour in a one-in-three dilution of Eludril with water.

Eludril Mouthwash is an antibacterial and analgesic solution which can be used to manage a number of oral health problems.
Its main use is to treat and prevent dental plaque formation and gum disease (gingivitis, also known as periodontitis) by preventing the build-up of bacteria.
Eludril Mouthwash can also be used to maintain oral hygiene in situations where tooth brushing is difficult, for instance, following oral surgery or in physically or mentally handicapped patients.
Eludril can also be used as a disinfectant for the cleansing of removable dentures and in the management of common mouth ulcers and oral candidiasis infections (fungus infections).
Elgydium Anti-Plaque toothpaste is specially formulated for sensitive gums and helps to prevent dental plaque and tartar build-up, the major causes of tooth decay and gum disease.
Elgydium Whitening, Sensitive and Decay Protection are also available as part of the Elgydium range of toothpastes.
