Tackle Gum Disease to Reduce Risk of Premature Birth, Warn Eludril and Elgydium

Oral health experts at Eludril and Elgydium are urging expectant mothers to reduce the risk of premature birth by getting treatment for gum disease. Their warning follows new research from America.

The new study showed that mothers-to-be who underwent a simple treatment for gum disease were 34 per cent less likely to give birth prematurely.

The research – published in the Journal of Periodontology (Vol. 83, No 12, Clinical Science) – was carried out by a team at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

It further confirms known links between gum disease and the premature birth of babies less than 37 weeks into pregnancy, say the manufacturers of Eludril mouthwash and Elgydium toothpaste.

They are urging expectant mothers to make use of the free NHS treatment that is available to pregnant women.

NHS-registered expectant mothers can claim free scaling and root planing treatment to gently scrape away the plaque that leads to gingivitis (gum disease) symptoms such as soreness or swelling in the gums.

“This treatment is quick and easy so it makes good sense for mothers to get their teeth and gums checked. Tackling gum disease early can reduce the likelihood of giving birth prematurely,” said a spokesperson for Eludril and Elgydium.

“With all the other pressures and worries of impending motherhood, it can be all too easy to forget something as simple as caring for your teeth and gums.

“But it would be foolish to ignore oral health when there are links to premature birth.”
