DETROIT, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Metro Parent and Henry Ford Health System are proud to welcome Jenny McCarthy, the internationally known TV and movie personality, and best-selling author of Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism to the metro Detroit area. McCarthy will be the keynote speaker at the Living with Autism Workshop on April 16, 2008 at the Troy Hilton, an event designed to educate locals about the developmental disorder that targeted her son three years ago. After her discovery of 2-year-old Evan's autism, she began her path towards self-education, and went on to write the book that has put her on the map for increasing autism awareness and knowledge.
After her successful attempts at regaining a relatively normal child life for her son, she wrote, "I have no idea why some treatments work on some kids and not others. But I beg moms and dads to at least try. I will work my ass off raising awareness for autism and banging down doors to get answers." And she has kept her word, coming to the area to speak at the Living with Autism Workshop.
This workshop -- designed for parents, educators, counselors and health professionals -- will allow attendees to make connections with those working or coping with autism and visit vendor booths from local autism experts. Talk to parents of children with autism during the provided continental breakfast and lunch, and join in the Q&A portion with keynote speaker Jenny McCarthy and our entire panel of experts.
Choose from two of eight breakout sessions offered by autism experts from Henry Ford Health System, Oakland University School of Education and Human Services (OUCARES), and the Kaufman Children's Center. Topics include diagnosing autism, adolescents/adults with autism, heredity's role in the disorder, and the latest in non-traditional options for treatment.
The event will be held from 8:30a.m. to 3p.m. at the Troy Hilton in
Troy, Mich., with general admission prices s
