TFAH Commends President's 2010 Budget
Date:5/7/2009

WASHINGTON, May 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Trust for America's Health commends the Obama Administration for increases in the fiscal year (FY) 2010 budget for public health programs that will help improve the health of Americans.

"The President is walking the walk when it comes to funding public health," said Jeff Levi, PhD, Executive Director of TFAH. "The Administration is making a serious investment in the public's health. First, the FY 09 omnibus budget made progress toward filling in gaps in many chronic disease and environmental health programs that have existed for years, then the stimulus bill included significant funding for wellness and prevention programs, followed by proposed emergency supplemental funds to boost pandemic flu preparedness, and now the FY 10 budget builds upon those increases and significantly boosts resources for public health preparedness."

Some public health preparedness highlights from the budget include:

  • An increase of $259.3 million to improve food safety efforts at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA);
  • The first proposed increase in several years for state and local health departments and hospitals to prepare for public health emergencies, to begin restoring cuts made in previous years; and
  • An increase of $26 million in funding for the Strategic National Stockpile; and
  • An increase of $30 million for the Biomedical Advance Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to spark research and development of vaccines, medical treatments, and medical devices for use in public health emergencies and disease outbreaks.

Trust for America's Health is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to saving lives by protecting the health of every community and working to make disease prevention a national priority.
